Fashion and film: a match made in aesthetic heaven

What the silver screen can teach us about real life style

Movies and fashion have always walked hand in hand. For us sartorial creatures, watching a film isn’t merely a pastime, but a moment to analyse, interpret and obsess over the best costume design has to offer.

Here are a few of my favourites:

The Talented Mr. Ripley

A movie that combines many of my favorite things: Italy, jazz, the 50’s and amazing wardrobe!

Inglourious Basterds

The fashion moments aren’t many, but when they arrive, it’s 30’s/40’s surrealist style at its best. Can anyone resist Shosanna’s “getting ready” scene with David Bowie as the soundtrack?

I Am Love

One of my favorite films for style inspiration. Tilda Swinton’s looks are so chic and convincing as what a wealthy Milanese matron would wear. Bonus points for Marisa Berenson’s wardrobe as well.

Sabrina

It’s not easy to choose just one Audrey Hepburn movie, much less when it comes to which one has the best wardrobe. I choose Sabrina for a the major style (and life) lessons:

  1. If you have a ball, go all out

  2. A day out in the boat is no excuse to be lazy and boring (always add lipstick and earrings)

  3. If you can go to Paris, GO TO PARIS

  4. Casual is not synonym with sneakers and tracksuits. Opt for black top and cigarette pants instead.
